Sefur // Sleeping

When Hrappur Birkir was still just this little unborn creature nestling inside me I used to sing to my belly. I don’t know why really but it seemed to calm him if he was moving around a lot and I guess it was a way for me to prepare for motherhood in some way. Then after he was born I continued to sing for him whenever he was too tired to sleep or irritated by gas or just anything really. He’s 16 months old now and I still sing to him whenever I can. It doesn’t matter what I sing. I’ll sing my favorite lullaby from Dýrin í Hálsaskógi when he goes to sleep but sometimes I just sing Death cab for cutie songs or something with Paul Baribeau. He likes it all and he is probably the only person in the world who will ever find my singing soothing.

The other day while singing to him our lullaby he did something new though. After I was done singing it twice (Once is not enough. He almost always wants to hear it twice!) he put his hands together, clapped and smiled. Then he turned away and burried his face into his blanket as to say “I’m going to sleep now. You can go.”. I smiled and walked out.

Sometimes motherhood is hard and challenging especially these last months now that there’s just the two of us but it’s the little things like this that make it all worth while.
